July’s Welcome from Miriam Weisinger

Dear Members & Friends

Welcome to the July edition of the Fairford & Lechlade Business Club newsletter. It is hard to believe that half the year has gone, with restoration of freedoms hopefully coming this month. Perhaps it is as well that none of us have a crystal ball …

My name is Miriam Weisinger and I joined the Steering Group at the AGM held at the end of April 2021. I joined the Club in 2017 – having taken over the business of the company I then worked for – really to make new social connections with other small business owners in the area. We are verbatim reporters and digital transcribers, transcribing mainly audio recordings of official/quasi-legal proceedings. Most of our work is very interesting if slightly sad, as it normally means that for someone somewhere something has gone wrong for one reason or another.

However, the purpose of this introduction is to tell you about our second in-person get-together since the start of the pandemic, our first evening meeting. We were hosted by Rory Souter of the Cotswold Cider Company at the Mill in Coleshill – somewhere I have never visited, despite living almost half my life down the road in Highworth.

Around 20 of us gathered in the Orchard, where it all started around 20 years ago. Rory thought better use could be made of the windfall apples and had the idea of making cider at home. From these small beginnings, the company has grown; the fermenting now taking place in Gloucestershire and apples bought in specifically for cider-making. The craft cider is made the original way, by crushing the apples, rather than from concentrate. More about the company can be found on their website.

We were able to sample different ciders, from the original No Brainer (a scrumpy-like, still cider which is also good for cooking) to Tuk Tuk (infused with lemongrass and with a citrus tone). The names are great too – Side Burns, Sweet Cheeks and She Devil to name a few. I am quite sure some would taste great added to a gin and tonic – maybe in conjunction with the discount code Rory is offering for free delivery “stayathomecider

We also saw the mill working – amazing that something so old (it has been restored) can work so quietly. It was good to welcome new members and see the friendly faces of members I have met before.

Have a good July and I hope to see some of you at the summer social at the end of July or the next evening meeting at Cotswold Woollen Weavers in September.
